Tragic South Korea Plane Crash: 179 Dead After Jeju Air Aircraft's Landing Gear Failure; Black Boxes Found

On the evening of 29 December 2024, South Korea witnessed a devastating aviation disaster when Jeju Air Flight 2216, en route from Bangkok to Muan International Airport, crashed during its landing attempt. The catastrophe, caused by a landing gear malfunction believed to be linked to a bird strike, resulted in the tragic loss of 179 lives. Officials have since recovered the aircraft’s black boxes, shedding hope for answers to understand the chain of events that led to this tragic accident.

What Happened During the Crash?

The incident unfolded just after 20:30 local time, as the Boeing 737-800 was descending toward its destination at Muan International Airport. The pilots encountered mechanical issues during the approach, declaring a mayday moments before attempting an emergency landing. Despite their efforts, the landing gear failed to deploy, forcing the aircraft to crash land.

The plane skidded on its belly across the runway, colliding with a concrete barrier and exploding into flames. The chaos left only two survivors, both of whom are being treated for life-threatening injuries, making it one of South Korea's worst air tragedies in decades. Investigators are now focused on analysing the black boxes of the flight, which contain critical data about its final moments.

Black Boxes Recovered:

Within hours of the disaster, search teams successfully recovered the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). These vital instruments will play a key role in determining the root causes of the crash. The FDR records technical data about the flight, while the CVR captures audio from the cockpit, potentially revealing the discussions between the pilots as the incident unfolded.

Timing of Tragedy Draws National Mourning:

The timing of the crash, just days before the New Year, adds an extra layer of poignancy as families who expected to celebrate together are now grieving loved ones. In response, South Korea's government has declared a national mourning period, with widespread tributes to the 179 victims.
